Towards Multimodality: Comparing Quantifications of Movement Coordination

Human conversations are inherently multimodal, encompassing verbal and nonverbal components. A key part of a conversation is coordination, or the ways in which people influence one another's behavior, cognition, and emotion over time. Although this field spans a variety of research areas and modalities, previous work has tended to use different analysis methods for capturing coordination, leading to difficulties in spanning across findings and operationalizations. To help address this, we here compare three methods for quantifying similarities in time series: cross-recurrence quantification analysis (CRQA), dynamic time warping (DTW), and convergent cross mapping (CCM). As a test case, we analyze movement patterns between pairs of people engaged in conversation. Our results find that each of these methodologies provides insights into different aspects of movement coordination, helping us build towards our larger goal of finding a multimodal analysis framework in the field of interpersonal coordination.
