Periodic reservoir drawdown causes repeated wet–dry cycles in the drawdown zone, leading to pronounced changes in rock mechanical properties and potential instability. Because the Yangtze River water contains multiple dissolved ions, how chemically assisted wet–dry cycling drives strength degradation and alters failure characteristics remains unclear. In this study, limestone specimens were subjected to wet–dry cycles under several representative chemical environments. Damage evolution and failure development were characterized using acoustic emission (AE) monitoring combined with Recurrence Quantification Analysis (RQA) and machine learning. Chemical deterioration was further assessed through test and chemical modeling. The results show that deionized water causes the least damage. Rock damage increases markedly when Na2SO4 and NaCl is added, but decreases when NaOH is added. In deionized water, damage is dominated by the propagation of large-scale microcracks. In Na2SO4 and NaCl solutions, multiscale damage coexists within the specimens. In the combined Na2SO4, NaCl and NaOH solution, small-scale damage becomes dominant. In the presence of Na2SO4 and NaCl, the addition of NaOH enhances Ca2+ adsorption and thereby suppresses the chemical damage induced by sulfate/chloride attack. These findings clarify the chemically assisted strength degradation mechanisms of drawdown-zone rocks under wet–dry cycles and provide a scientific basis for geohazard prevention and sustainable energy supply.
