Recurrence analysis of interjoint coordination in children during volleyball practice task constraints

The development of motor coordination results from the interplay between organismic, task and environmental constraints (Newell, 1986). In sports, the type of ball that is used can be considered a task constraint of major importance that affects motor performance (Gagen & Getchell, 2004). The purpose of this study was to examine how the alteration of task constraints (i.e., volleying with a ball or balloon) leads to changes in the coordinative movement pattern related to the volley, i.e,, coordination among elbow and knee joints while children performed the volley technique. To assess the level and characteristics of the coordination, we employed cross recurrence quantification analysis (CRQA, Marwan, Romano, Thiel, & Kurths, 2007; Shockley, 2005).
