During the last decades agricultural commodities prices have risen exponentially for a number of reasons, such as the devaluation of US dollar, or the diversion of food commodities to biofuel production, affecting many countries, especially the developing countries, leading to food insecurity, and increasing hunger and poverty. Following the food crisis in recent years, more interest has emerged to investigate the influence of internal and external market factors on the variation of commodity prices. In this work, we analyze the influence of exchange rate on the Brazilian sugar price using cross-recurrence plot (CRP) and cross-recurrence quantification analysis (CRQA) methods that serve to visualize and quantify the trajectories of dynamical systems in the same phase space. The results show that the dynamics of correlation between sugar price series recorded in real and dollar has a stochastic behavior, with a low synchronization and low trapping time in similar states in phase space.
