Use of Recurrence Plots in the Analysis of Time-Series Data

Recovering information about the recurrent behavior of a non-stationary time series typically requires large data set and extensive off-line analysis. However, the technique of creating a recurrence plot can be used to graphically represent global recurrent structures. Characteristic elements of recurrent patterns include line segments of various orientations. We will classify some of these structures by examining several types of computer-generated time series. We will then identify some of the structures in recurrence plots of experimentally derived time series. We will see how geometrical properties of these plots also provide insight into local rates of divergence and dimensional complexity. We conclude with a classification of the dynamics corresponding to various line segment orientations.
